Sometimes I forget I live in the midst of an archipelago. A few days ago, though, I went to Governor’s Island to see my photo show one more time and have a picnic with a friend. Riding the ferry across Buttermilk Channel and the East River, biking around the entire island in about 15 minutes, and the views across New York Harbor all reminded me of just how many islands New York City contains.
I flipped through this book once at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge visitor’s center, and the descriptions of islands from Rat Island to North Brother Island — all part of New York City — captured my imagination. Especially Rat Island. I’d like to explore more of this teeming archipelago, even if only by book.
This book costs $20, and so does this drawing!
PS: Several people have asked for larger images of the drawings. Is this better? I don’t want to post full-sized drawings, but I’ll go back and put slightly larger previews on earlier posts when I have time.
